I know we've established that the W222 has ludicrous amounts of tech, but it's cool to see a rundown of all the car's systems. As always, Saabkyle delivers with his in depth look at the S-Class.

At idle it sounds like a tractor.

Direct injection. Pretty much everything with DI sounds like that at idle. The ticking isn't quite that loud in person and is hardly noticeable with the hood closed.

Good. In that video it sounds rougher than a modern diesel truck.

Or like it needs chain tensioners. Surprised me how loud it sounded in that video.

It sounded almost as rough as my friends IDI. That's not a compliment. Which it does have the advantage of indirect injection, but I don't find it any smoother.

Unfortunately I'm familiar with those. We don't get along very well. But I'm happy to say that these engines are super smooth and quiet. From the driver's seat you can't feel that it's running, and you can only just barely hear the rumble, not the ticking. You can kind of hear the injectors standing next to the hood but it's not intrusive. Some of the newer BMW's with DI are crazy loud though, almost like this video, but as far as I know they may have had issues, my experience with them is quite limited.

I was referring to my friends old Ford IDI, but yeah if it's just the video making them sound like that, it's understandable. If a camera can make someone gain ten pounds, why can't mics make something sound terrible?

I know exactly what you were referring to, I grew up in farm country in the Midwest, worked on a few IDI's in my life unfortunately.

I kind of like the old damn things for some reason. I guess because it's one of the few things sold in the U.S. sold in the last 25 years that is as slow as my Toyota.

To each his own. The owner of the very first shop I ever worked at had a flat bed truck powered by one of those. Pretty reliable actually. I hated working on it though.
